Many internships and part-time undergrad jobs are plagued with basic tasks, grunt work, and little to no impactful experience; however, Launch Lab’s internship program has broken this stereotype for me and 7 other interns since day one.
The team at Launch Labs is constantly finding new solutions for clients and innovating on our current products. This, combined with the small business environment in which we operate, has given interns an active role everyday.. We have been put at the front of impactful projects and given the ability to make real change.
What is the Launch Labs Internship?
Launch Lab’s internship program hires students from nearby UNC-Chapel Hill, as Help Desk Technicians within the Customer Success Department. Interns are expected to work 8-12 hours a week, and tasks involve working on the frontlines of client website operations, including building out offers, auditing and assisting onboarding, generating reports, and raising complex technical issues. In addition, interns get to witness many of the operations and innovation that happens in a startup environment. Our monthly all-staff meetings are some of my favorite times in the office, where we get to hear about new and upcoming features and products, such as Chat AI. During my time here I witnessed this tool go from idea to implementation and learned about the different processes and people involved in a new feature rollout.
The Intern Impact: Team Enrichment Through Diverse Voices
Launch Lab’s prioritizes hiring interns from diverse backgrounds, both personally and academically. According to the internship mission statement, “This inclusivity not only benefits our interns but also enriches our entire company, driving breakthrough innovations.” With majors from Biology to Business to Computer Science, interns tackle challenges from different perspectives and pursue their own exciting projects.
In addition to my customer success tasks, I sought out opportunities in Marketing, working with our VP of Marketing, Holly Fong. Under her guidance, I was given freedom and flexibility to work on projects that align with my interests, including creating LinkedIn content, organizing content posting schedules, and analyzing SEO reports to increase website traffic. Likewise, one of my fellow interns, Caroline Cunningham, applied their Computer Science background to improve existing website features and update geolocation tracking. This, in combination with our customer success pursuits, has allowed us to maximize our experience over our two semesters at Launch Labs.
Company Perspective: Interns Think Differently
Our Founder and CEO, Garrett Roach, is a Chapel Hill alum from both the College of Arts and Sciences and The Eshelman School of Pharmacy. This experience is why he made it a priority to hire from his alma mater.
“Interns force us to think about things differently. It’s a good way to get different perspectives, especially in a small business that mainly hires from previous connections,” Roach said.
I have had the privilege of being with Launch Labs since the inception of the internship program in Spring 2024. It has been clear from the start that the team is invested in our learning and success. Emily Sabol, our VP of Operations explains that “our intention is to be able to provide our interns with real working experience prior to their graduation. Class projects are useful, but not the same kind of resume builder that an internship like this would give.”
This experience and management technique has been a driving force in finding and keeping interns. Beatrice Babel , another current intern, appreciates that “the management is supportive and provides flexible scheduling that works for students.”
A Career-Launching Experience
Having the opportunity to seek out different focus areas during this internship has been pivotal to me, especially as I am preparing to enter the full time workforce and pick a career. Outside of Launch Labs, I recently worked a full-time summer internship at a Fortune 500 company, and the experience was much different. While Launch Labs offers great flexibility in working and a larger scope of work, that role offered networking opportunities and a truly deep dive into a specific project area.
My advice for all students is to seek out experience in diverse roles, companies, and industries to get a better understanding of what kind of work inspires you and to increase your network. I would recommend the Launch Labs internship to any student looking to gain truly applicable experience, work in the Chapel Hill area, and learn more about startup operations. For those interested, be on the lookout on Handshake for Summer and Fall 2025 opportunities.
I am deeply grateful for the chance to learn and grow alongside such talented teammates. Thank you to the entire Launch Labs team for an incredible experience that has set me on an exciting path forward!
